Roll roofing for Olympia roofs

For an Olympia roof, residential roll roofing is a product format used on some accessory roofs, such as porches, garages and sheds. A mineral-surfaced asphalt roll is a specific rolled sheet product; it is not the same system as a TPO, PVC or EPDM single-ply membrane.

System fit

Where does roll roofing fit?

A roof where the exact roll product’s instructions support the slope, substrate and exposure. GAF lists roll roofing for low-slope accessory structures, but that does not make every roll product suitable for every flat or low-slope roof.

What changes the decision?

  • A mineral-surfaced asphalt roll uses a surfaced bituminous sheet and product-specific laps.
  • TPO, PVC and EPDM are membrane families with different materials and seam systems, not generic names for roll roofing.
  • Product instructions set the permitted roof conditions, underlayment, laps and edge details.

Is roll roofing the same as TPO or EPDM?

No. Mineral-surfaced asphalt roll roofing is a specific rolled sheet product. TPO and EPDM are single-ply membrane systems with their own seam, attachment and flashing details. Use the exact product name when comparing them.

Where is residential roll roofing used?

GAF lists roll roofing products for accessory structures such as porches, garages, carports and sheds. Confirm the exact product’s slope, substrate, exposure and lap instructions for your roof.

How do I know whether it fits my roof?

Use the product’s listed slope and assembly requirements for the actual roof geometry. If the documents do not clearly support the condition, compare a different system specified for that roof.

Which roll roofing options should the proposal identify?

Mineral-surface roll product

A specific surfaced asphalt sheet product. Its own instructions set the roof slope, laps and compatible substrate; not every roll product uses this surface.

Self-adhered roll product

Use the selected manufacturer’s substrate, temperature and application requirements. Product instructions control the installation.

Other roll roofing system

Compare the product name and written assembly, including laps, edges, drainage and penetrations.

More than the visible surface

A roof is a connected assembly.

The covering works with the layers beneath it and the details at every edge and opening.

  1. Roof coveringThe selected material and its fastening or attachment system.
  2. Water-shedding layersCompatible underlayment or membrane details, edges, valleys and flashings.
  3. Roof deck & structureThe sound, prepared substrate that supports the selected system.
  4. The building beneathVentilation, insulation and interior protection coordinated with the roof work.
